Romania Rail Orientation Visit

In 1994, the European Community developed the blueprint for a Trans-European Transport Network.  The European Corridor Map shows the centrality of Romania in relation to Pan-European Corridors IV, VII and IX and the country's importance as a land bridge between Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Romania's railways (The SNCFR) received loans from the IBRD ($120 million), EBRD ($72.6 million), EU-PHARE (Euro 58 million) for track renewal and maintenance, information systems, signals, telecommunications, motive power, railcars, and training to be implemented over a period of six years, and $37.4 million co-financing for passenger car rehabilitation. SNCFR also reduced staff by about 30% and split into five independent but related companies.

A definitional mission (DM) was conducted by TDA in 2001 to identify projects and areas of interest to US industry.  One of the recommendations was to conduct an Orientation Visit (OV) for selected Romanian rail officials to familiarize them with the US rail industry and to counter the heavy influence exerted by European countries in this area.
