Project Details (2)

The Bulgarian Operational Programme on Transport 2007-2013 (OPT) will focus on development of railway, road and waterway infrastructure, as well as establishment of requirements for the stability of the Bulgarian transport system. The OPT has prioritized their program into several strategic axes:

  • Priority Axis I - Development of railway infrastructure along the major national and Pan-European transport axes
  • Priority Axis II - Development of road infrastructure along the major national and Pan-European transport axes
  • Priority Axis III - Improvement of intermodality for passenger and freight
  • Priority Axis IV - Improvement of the maritime and inland-waterway navigation
  • Priority Axis V - Technical Assistance

The four projects represented on this orientation visit are defined under Priority Axis I and are to help attain EU railway standards, and improve train speed and rail links with neighboring countries. The projects also seek to reduce border crossing times; improve passenger rail station attractiveness; modernize intermodal transportation infrastructure; and improve rail safety. The specific projects are:

  • Vidin-Sofia – A $455M modernization project of the Vidin-Sofia railway line planned to complete by the end of 2017.
  • Sofia-Plovdiv – A $178M modernization project of the Sofia-Plovdiv railway line planned to complete by the end of 2015.
  • Sofia-Pernik-Radomir – A $142M modernization project of the Sofia-Pernik-Radomir railway line planned to complete by the end of 2015.
  • Svelingrad-Turkish border - A $50M construction and electrification project which includes a new 19 km railway section approved for speeds of up to 160 km/h.

All of these projects involve construction and upgrades of tracks, electrical substation and transmission systems, signaling systems, communication systems, and traffic control systems along major European transportation corridors.
