Development of the Bulgarian railroad infrastructure has become an important condition to ensure successful integration into the European transport system. In 2007, the EU approved the €2 billion Operational Program for Transport (OPT) for Bulgaria covering the years 2007-2013. OPT has appointed the Bulgarian National Railway Infrastructure Company (NRIC), to receive dedicated public funds to undertake four priority projects:
All of these projects involve construction and upgrades of tracks, electrical substation and transmission systems, signaling systems, communication systems, and traffic control systems along major European transportation corridors.
